Troubleshooting Guide

IMPORTANT NOTE: This guide applies to both Nortevs original Flexineb and our latest release Flexineb E2 system. Where Flexineb Controller is mentioned this means these comments only apply to the original Flexineb Controller with GREY On/Off Button. Our new Flexineb E2 Controller has a BLACK On/Off button and the number 2 or E2 on the front cover. You can upgrade your original system to benefit from Flexineb E2 improvements by buying the Flexineb E2 Upgrade Package from your local distributor. 1 My Medication Cup has slowed down or stopped working(click to read more)

The Flexineb equine nebuliser Medication Cup is a wearable part. On average, you will get up to 120 treatments using 0.9% Saline Solution; however this can be reduced when using other solutions that are more corrosive or erosive.

Check that the drug or natural product used is listed on the Nortev Drug Table and if it requires dilution with 0.9% Saline Solution. If it is not listed, then it may not be suitable for use with Flexineb. Contact Nortev for further advice with non-listed drugs and natural products if required. 

Clean the Medication Cup following the Instructions provided to check if this resolves the problem. If you notice the drug or liquid used is leaking and dripping through the mesh in the Med Cup it can indicate the Med Cup is at end of life. If there is evidence of big holes in the mesh when you hold it up to the light, then this is a sign you require a new Med Cup.

WARNING: DO NOT NEBULISE ANY DISINFECTANT OR CLEANING SOLUTION THROUGH YOUR FLEXINEB MEDICATION CUP. THIS COULD REDUCE THE LIFE OR PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR MEDICATION CUP.

2. I just got a new medication cup and it is not working at all, is it faulty?(click to read more)

Not necessarily. First you need to identify if you have a Flexineb 1 or a Flexineb 2 system. A Flexineb 1 system has a grey power on/off button & a Flexineb 2 has a black power on/off button and is clearly branded as Flexineb2 or Flexineb E2. You will need to ensure you bought a Flexineb 1 Med cup for your Flexineb 1 controller- as these med cups are not compatable with the new Flexineb 2 technology – as an existing customer you can purchase an upgrade kit at a discounted price which will give you a new controller cable & med cup  & a renewed 2 year warranty. Contact your local Flexineb representative & they can explain this to you!

3. My medication cup is running much faster than it used to – what’s wrong?(click to read more)

Flexineb uses Vibrating Mesh Technology to nebulise your medication into an aerosol. As the med cup is a replaceable part, it does begin to ‘wear out’ after use. How Flexineb Med cups ‘wear out’ is due to use & medication being vibrated through our mesh cups, they will often naturally begin to speed up with wear. 4. My Medication cup is much slower than it used to be – what’s wrong?(click to read more)

Flexineb uses Vibrating Mesh Technology to nebulise your medication into an aerosol. As the med cup is a replaceable part, which needs to be cleaned after each & every use,  as it ages and wears out, often the mesh can become clogged with tiny particles of left over medication which can begin to slow down the cup. 5. My Flexineb E2 seems to pause or stop nebulising then restarting every 30 seconds or so – is my system broken or is there something wrong?(click to read more)

No, your Flexineb E2 is a significantly advanced controller, and has an ‘Automatic Tuning Feature’ which means that every 30 second it will do an internal operating frequency sweep to ensure it is operating at the correct operating point to nebulise the liquid you have placed in its medication cup. If you are nebulising a thin watery type liquid, it will ramp down to ensure it is nebulising it correctly, and if you are nebulising a thick antibiotic solution, it will ramp up to ensure it is nebulising this liquid correctly – it needs to work harder for thicker liquids to nebulise them effectively. In essence – this pause in aerosol you are seeing, is your intelligent Flexineb E2 controller ensuring it is operating at the correct frequency.

6. A constant amber light has appeared on my Flexineb Controller (bottom left LED) and it is no longer nebulising(click to read more)

There are a few reasons this may happen:

There is a fault with the charger

Insert the charger into the controller and switch the power on. If a green LED light does not appear on the top right of the controller then there is a fault with the charger.

There is a fault with the battery.

Change internal battery with a new battery, if the amber LED light turns off then the battery was either faulty or has come to its end of life. Please note that the battery has an estimated life of 12 months.

The controller has not been charged regularly

Place your controller on charge overnight or for at least 6 hours. After this period of charging, turn on your controller, if the amber LED light is no longer showing then the fault is due to undercharging. (Please note it is recommended that you charge your Flexineb controller as soon as the low battery LED light comes on. (top left LED, flashing green)

There is an internal fault in the controller

If the amber LED light continue to stay on after the above tests, please return to Nortev.

7. A constant amber light (bottom left LED) has appeared on my Flexineb controller but it is still nebulising slowly(click to read more)

The electronic Controller has been damaged and will need to be returned to the manufacturer Nortev for repair if not damaged beyond repair. Please note that all Flexineb E2 controllers are under warranty for 24 months after purchase, however, returning for examination will determine if the issue is warranty related, or accidental damage.

8. A constant green light has appeared on my Flexineb controller after charging even when the charger is removed(click to read more)

The electronic Controller has been damaged and will need to be returned to the manufacturer Nortev for repair if not damaged beyond repair. Please note that all Flexineb E2 controllers are under warranty for 24 months after purchase, however, returning for examination will determine if the issue is warranty related, or accidental damage.

9. A flashing amber light has appeared and my Flexineb is no longer nebulising and it turns off automatically(click to read more)

This means there is an open electrical circuit somewhere in the system. The typical cause of this problem is a broken Cable or damaged connections on the Controller or Med Cup side.

The cable has been incorrectly inserted into the Controller or Med Cup and has damaged the internal pins of the connector pins.

The most likely cause of this problem is a broken Cable and the cable must be replaced to fix the problem. If a new cable does not solve the problem, please return the controller, cable and medication cup to Nortev  the manufacturer for repair. This internal pin breakage is not covered under warranty due to the cause of it being accidental damage/mis-handling and will incurr a repair fee.

10. I cannot unplug the Cable from the Controller or Medication Cup(click to read more)

The Cable plugs have a simple male to female connection. Please do not twist your cable in the connection - pull the cable straight out without twisting it.

11. The Aerosol Chamber on the front of the Mask does not empty when my horse inhales(click to read more)

Check that all vents at the bottom of the Mask are closed off and the rubber exit valve is present and opening and closing correctly.

Check that the Mask is fitted properly and creating a good seal around the head of the horse. Some horses tend to shallow breath when they are getting used to Flexineb. Some people walk their horse to help them to breath deeper during treatment.

12. There is a lot of the nebulised drug gathering in the bottom of the Aerosol Chamber(click to read more)

Check to see if your medication cup is dripping & if it is - it is likely it needs to be replaced. Cups will start to drip when they are getting to the end of their life. 

If your cup is not at the end of its life, and is not dripping, check if the Aerosol Chamber on the front of the Mask is clearing when the horse inhales. If not, check the vents at the bottom of the Mask are closed off and the rubber exit valve is present and opening and closing ok. Check that the Mask is fitted properly and creating a good seal around the head of the horse. Some horses tend to shallow breathe when they are getting used to wearing Flexineb and this can mean the Aerosol Chamber is not clearing fully and drug rains out and gathers in the Chamber. It is recommended to walk the horse to help them breathe deeper during Flexineb treatment.

If the Mask is fitted correctly and the aerosol chamber is clearing when your horse inhales then it may be that the Med Cup you have is nebulising your particular medication too fast and this is causing it to drain out within the aerosol chamber. Refer to Nortev’s Drug Table for more information on optimised drug delivery by matching certain drugs to our colour coded Med Cups. Contact Nortev Customer Service Team for more advice if required.

13. My horse becomes very uneasy when Flexineb is fitted(click to read more)

Most horses accept Flexineb amazingly well, but when using Flexineb for the first time on the horse caution is advised. People will often place a treat or mint inside the mask to encourage their horse to place their nose into the mask themselves. Softly place the Flexineb over the horses’ nose and mouth with the bottom exit valve open so the horse can breathe normally. Push up until the nostrils are covered and a seal is made around the nose and mouth. Once the horse is breathing normally and is getting used to the Flexineb, close the exit valve and commence treatment. If the horse is resisting the mask be patient and let them look and smell it before attempting to fit the mask again. If the horse is startled during treatment, open the exit valve slightly so more air is inhaled. Close the valve again once the horse is relaxed. In an emergency situation, the rubber exit valve on the bottom of the mask can be pulled out to allow the horse breathe freely. Although the mask material is soft and flexible the front aerosol chamber and battery controller is hard plastic therefore caregivers should be mindful of the risk posed by the horse shaking its head with the Flexineb fitted.

Some horses may reject the smell of some medications or natural therapies and can become uneasy during use. Stay with your horse to help them settle & perhaps take them for a walk to settle them. 

14. I turn on Flexineb and it turns off after 3 to 5 seconds; it will not stay on for me(click to read more)

This can happen if the low battery warning flashing light on top left of controller went unnoticed and the battery is dead and it will need a full charge which takes 4 to 5 hours. Plug in the charger supplied with the system and check the green battery charge light on top right of controller comes on. When the battery is fully charged, this green light will go out and the unit should turn on again and operate correctly. To avoid this problem happening, it is important to charge the battery when you notice the top left green light flashing. Refer to the Instructions For Use for an explanation of these controller LED functions.

15. My control unit keeps turning off after 18 minutes, is it broken?(click to read more)

No, your unit is not broken it has just automatically timed out and switched off. The control unit has an 18 minute timer that automatically turns the unit off. Just hit the button again and it will run for another 18 minutes unless you turn it off manually. The timer feature is to protect the battery in the event the unit is left on or gets switched on by mistake and runs down the battery.
